3 Key Principles of Goal Setting

In the posts preceding this, I have shared with you amazing things about Goal Setting and Personal Development which you can get here.
I mentioned in Personal Development Goals, that Personal development goals help you to take responsibility for your own life and also become the author of your own future, rather than a passive victim of whatever others might have arranged for you. I also said that those goals help you identify what you want to achieve at work and in life and therefore you can determine what you want to learn to do or what you want to be.
But today I’ll be exploring the Key Principles of Good Goal Setting.
1) Link your goals to your role
This involves understanding what you are responsible for doing or producing.
To do this, begin by reflecting on:
- Your role
- What you are responsible for
- What your key work objective for this year is?
2) Setting SMART Goals
The second principle in goal setting is to make sure that your goals are SMART.
SMART Goals are:
- Specific Measurable – ensuring that the goal can be quantified such as financial results, production volumes, sales numbers, or quality standards.
- Attainable – ensuring the goals are reasonable
- Relevant – ensuring that the goals ate in line with your mission
- Time-bound – ensuring you’ve indicated the date by which you’ll achieve the goal.
Note: If it’s a large goal (for a year or so), define sub-objectives you can measure on the way so you know if you’re on track or if you need to change your implementation plan.
Example
Jane’s SMART goal: To reduce the number of complaints from clients from 6% to 4% by December this year.
3) Track and Adapt Your Goals:
The third key principle of goal setting is to make sure that you track and monitor your progress and make all necessary adjustments to ensure you’re on track to achieve your goals.
